London's Chinatown is in the heart of the West End, close to Piccadilly Circus and between the theatres and cinemas of Shaftesbury Avenue and Leicester Square. This vibrant area is noted for its 24 hour leisure economy where many restaurants trade throughout the night.
Shaftesbury’s holdings in Chinatown comprise 57 restaurants, 53 shops, 48,000 sq ft of offices and 70 residential units. These holdings were valued at £341.6 million at 30 September 2007 and represented 25% by value of the Company’s portfolio.
Chinatown is popular with restaurant and leisure businesses, which are attracted by the area's long hours of trading and high visitor numbers, particularly at evenings and weekends. The Company continues to develop and implement plans to maximise and up-grade available accomodation, particularly in the under-used centre of the Estate, to meet this continuing tenant demand.
The Company is working with Westminster City Council, its tenants and community groups to tackle the side effects that result from the success of longer hours of trading and ever growing demand for commercial space, so that Chinatown remains a safe, clean and welcoming destination for all visitors.
